Pinterest is the Starting Point, Not the Blueprint

Anecdotal:

The most rewarding role we play in the Design Studio is guiding homeowners through the journey of discovering their style and bringing it to life. It always begins with a conversation.
We talk about how they live, how they entertain, whether or not they cook often, how they spend weekends, what spaces matter most to them, and what they envision for their future home. Then comes the exciting part: laying out beautiful samples across the table and gradually building a palette that reflects their personality, lifestyle, and aspirations.

The Pin:

Whether it’s magazine clippings, photos torn from design books, television show references, screenshots from favorite designers, or today’s digital Pinterest boards, inspiration images have always been one of the most effective ways for homeowners to communicate their style. A picture truly is worth a thousand words. But what I’ve learned over the years is that the image itself is only part of the story.

My role (regarding the Pins):

Our role in the Design Studio is to connect the lifestyle we have  just discovered through conversation with the images homeowners have brought to the appointment. Sometimes the two aligned perfectly. At other times, they reveal opportunities for deeper discussion. A homeowner who loves entertaining and owns multiple sets of heirloom china might be drawn to kitchens filled with open shelving and minimal storage. Another who rarely cooks might fall in love with a professional-grade range simply because of the look. Neither choice is wrong. Rather, those moments allowed us to explore how beauty and functionality work together to create a home that felt just as good to live in as it does to admire. That’s why inspiration boards are such a valuable tool, but they’re most effective when viewed as a starting point rather than a blueprint.

Advice on how to use the Pins:

Turning inspiration into something tangible starts in the studio. Here are five keys to using your pins effectively during your design studio appointment.

Look Beyond the Image — One of the first things I encourage homeowners to do is focus on what they love about an image rather than trying to recreate it exactly. The homes you save online may have different room dimensions, ceiling heights, architectural styles, construction methods, or even building code requirements than your new home. While an exact replication may not be realistic, the design elements that attracted you to the image often can be. Was it the warmth of the wood tones? The contrast between light cabinetry and dark accents? The layered textures? The clean, modern simplicity? Understanding what specifically resonates with you helps us translate those ideas into selections that work beautifully within your home.

Understand That Materials Vary — Some products featured online may not be readily available, practical, or aligned with your desired investment range. But the good news is that today’s design industry offers an incredible variety of alternatives. Often, we can achieve a very similar aesthetic through thoughtfully selected materials that provide greater durability, availability, value, or ease of maintenance. The goal is never to compromise your vision. It’s to help you achieve it in a way that makes sense for your home and your lifestyle.

Design for the Way You Live — Perhaps the most important thing to remember when gathering inspiration is that beautiful homes should support the people who live in them. Your lifestyle should always be part of the design conversation. The most successful homes are not those that perfectly mimic a photograph. They are the ones that thoughtfully balance style, function, comfort, and practicality. Great design happens when beauty and functionality work together.

Know Where to be Timeless and Where to Have Fun! — Trends are one of the things that make design exciting. They introduce fresh ideas, new perspectives, and opportunities to personalize your home. For foundational elements such as flooring, cabinetry, and major countertops, we often recommend leaning toward timeless selections that will continue to feel beautiful for years to come. Then, have fun with the elements that are easier to refresh. Paint colors, wallpaper, decorative lighting, accent trim details, and specialty tile in spaces like powder baths or laundry rooms can add personality and current style without requiring a major renovation down the road.

Bring Your Vision to Life — Whether your inspiration comes from Pinterest, Instagram, a favorite designer, or a photo you’ve been saving for years, every image tells a story about what you love. The real magic happens when those ideas are thoughtfully interpreted through the lens of your lifestyle, priorities, and the unique home you’re creating. That’s where our Design Studio experts enter the process. Professionally trained to balance beauty, functionality, and investment, they help transform inspiration into a cohesive vision tailored specifically to you. From identifying common themes in your inspiration boards to recommending selections that support the way you live every day, they’re here to guide you through the process with confidence.

So, bring the pins. Bring the screenshots. Bring the ideas you’ve been collecting for years. Together, we’ll transform inspiration into a home that’s not only beautiful, but distinctly yours.
