3 Versatile Ways to Use Shiplap

I am obsessed with shiplap, subway tile, farmhouse sinks and barn doors. I mean honestly, who isn’t right now? The show Fixer Upper from HGTV has swept the nation and it seems like now everyone is shiplapping everything!

Those of you who don’t share this obsession may be wondering, what exactly is shiplap? According to Wikipedia: “Shiplap is a type of wooden board used commonly as exterior siding in the construction of residences, barns, sheds, and outbuildings. It is either rough-sawn 1" or milled 3/4" pine or similarly inexpensive wood between 3" and 10" wide with a 3/8" - 1/2" rabbet on opposite sides of each end. The rabbet allows the boards to overlap in this area.” It was originally made to work as a barrier to harsh climates. Now we use it because it looks beautiful!

Important question…where can I put it? Answer…almost anywhere!

Here it is, front and center in one of the most-used areas in the home! The shiplap is carried from the kitchen into the family room, giving the two rooms a clean, cohesive and comfortable feel. I can imagine many lazy Sundays spent in this space! But why stop there? Shiplap creates such great texture and clean lines, it’s the perfect addition to any room. In this master bedroom, it’s impeccably applied as an accent wall behind the headboard. In your teenager’s bedroom, it can serve as a backdrop to their favorite work of art or hobby.

I know what you are thinking, you’ve seen this applied in kitchens before, you’ve seen it in master suites and in bedrooms. You love it, but you’re like me and you want more! Thankfully, there’s no end to shiplap’s versatility. When I found this next photo, I honestly wanted to go do laundry! In fact, this laundry room has just become my happy place. Who would have ever thought I would put laundry and happy together in one sentence?
